Was Keanu Reeves Made for Action Movies?

The John Wick franchise was perhaps one of the best things to happen to action movies in the past decade. Every bit as important as the violence was it’s fast yet rhythmic pace and surprisingly decent storytelling, a pleasant change from traditional shoot ‘em ups that both dulled and dominated theatres for a time. Yet as good as the John Wick movies were, can anyone imagine them without Keanu Reeves?

Many people feel the same way about The Matrix trilogy. The Matrix was, by all accounts, revolutionary cinema, but without its star something would be missing. Indeed, Keanu Reeves was every bit as essential to The Matrix as was the storytelling and special effects.

He’s certainly come a long way since Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, and it didn’t take him very long to do so either. With 1991’s Point Break Reeve’s made a huge splash in the world of action cinema, and he cemented his role as an action star shortly thereafter with 1994’s Speed. The roles kept coming from there, and although nobody’s in a particular rush to remember 1995’s Johnny Mnemonic, Reeve’s has never found himself far away from the action with roles like Neo, John Constantine, and John Wick.

With a third installment of the John Wick franchise already in post-production, we have a feeling there’s plenty more to come from Keanu.
