Will Joker Incite Violence?

While fans were eagerly anticipating the release of Joker and studios were getting ready to cash in on what will hopefully be a blockbuster, law enforcement officials are standing at the ready for fear that the film will incite copycat violence.

In fact, even the U.S. Army is at the ready. Fearing actions like mass shooting from incel extremists, the Army released a memo to its service members stating that incels tend to “idolize the Joker character, the violent clown from the Batman series, admiring his depiction as a man who must pretend to be happy, but eventually fights back against bullies.”

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Joker star Joaquin Phoenix talked about the character and his violent tendencies: “You can either say here’s somebody who, like everybody, needed to be heard and understood and to have a voice. Or you can say this is somebody that disproportionately needs a large quantity of people to be fixated on him. His satisfaction comes as he stands in amongst the madness.”

“We’re making a movie about a fictional character in a fictional world, ultimately, and your hope is that people take it for what it is,” said director Todd Phillips in regards to the Army’s fears. The joker was released in early October to strong box office numbers, but no initial reports of copycat violence.

What to Watch After You Finish “The Boys”

Amazon Prime Video certainly has a hit on their hands with “The Boys,” and while the second season has already been greenlit it’ll still be a while before we see our favorite “heroes” on screen again. So what to do in the meantime? Well, Amazon Prime Video is still upping their offerings when it comes to superhero shows, but for the moment fans may have to venture elsewhere to get their fix. Here are two more shows you can watch while you wait for season 2 of “The Boys.”

The Umbrella Academy. Based on the comics of Gerard Way, (yes, the frontman from My Chemical Romance) The Umbrella Academy follows the path of seven remarkable children, all born on October 1, 1989, all adopted by the enigmatic billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves. The children were formed into a superhero team, but the family later became fractured only to be reunited by the death of their adopted father, who still holds a few secrets even in the afterlife. A second season is already in the works, and it’ll see the return of Ellen Page, Tom Hopper and Robert Sheehan among others.

Gotham. If you’ve ever wondered what forces were at play to create a city in need of a hero like Batman, then Gotham is for you. Although the series just aired its final season, there’s plenty of action and intrigue to keep you occupied for a while. Starring Ben McKenzie as a young James Gordon and a whole cast of familiar faces from the Batman comics, the 100 episodes of Gotham are well worth the investment.
